My all time favorite Movie: 不能說的秘密(Secret), 2007

108 paces of love

Hi guys! It’s JinJin. Thank you for visiting my blog spot! I tried to introduce my favorite movie “Secret”.

If I write specific synopsis, it can be a spoiler. So, I’d like to write down a brief story also will let you know before the end. If you just want to read my review, you could go down below!

  • Genre: Melo/Romance, Fantasy, Drama
  • Country: Taiwan
  • Director: Jay Chou

Let’s start!

Sang-Ryun who transferred to the art school where his father was in office. He was introduced to the school and went to the music room alone. In an old piano practice room led by beautiful piano sounds, he met Xiao-Yu like fate.

Sang-Ryun likes Xiao-Yu and asks this and that, but the answer is always "secret." Even though he wants to approach her, Xiao-Yu doesn't seem to attend properly. Nevertheless, the two get closer and Sang-Ryun attends to a piano battle that has a deep-rooted history at an art high school. Sang-Ryun, who has a natural talent for piano, wins and gets a rare piano score. The battle was for Xiao-Yu, and he gave the score to Xiao-Yu as a gift.

While spending their alone time, Xiao-Yu talks out of the blue. "You know what? I counted and it's 108 steps from the practice room to the classroom." Sang-Ryun also changes the subject out of the blue and the two have their first kiss. The relationship between the two has developed rapidly, and they also perform a couple dances in front of many people during the festival.

Xiao-Yu tells Sang-Ryun that the piano practice room, which is their hideout, will be torn down on the graduation day and teach him the song that attracted Sang-Ryun on the first day of their dramatic encounter. And she added, "The old piano in the practice room doesn't sound good, so don't practice there."

Since then, Xiao-Yu has not been in school for a while. After a long time, the two quarreled over a trivial matter, and Sang-Ryun sends a note to Xiao-Yu to meet her in the piano practice room. Somehow the note was misrepresented and went to Qing-Yi, and Sang-Ryun kissed her thinking she was Xiao-Yu. Xiao-Yu comes across the scene. Since then, Sang-Ryun could not see Xiao-Yu as she ran away.

But six months later, surprisingly, Xiao-Yu suddenly appears at the graduation ceremony! Sang-Ryun plays the piano as a valedictorian and runs out after discovering her. To Xiao-Yu, "Don't just fade away. Let's meet in the classroom after the graduation ceremony." He goes back to the graduation ceremony. Sang-Ryun headed to the classroom after the event, but could not find Xiao-Yu.

He asked his friends, who were in the classroom just in time if they saw the girl who danced together with him at the festival, but they responded, "What are you talking about? You danced alone silly?" Sang-Ryun doesn't know what's happening now, but he waits for Xiao-Yu in his seat. Then, the letters begin to be written with a correction pen on the desk.

I'm Xiao-Yu. I love you. Do you love me, too?

Sang-Ryun draws a heart as an answer to it but nothing happens.

(The ending of the movie is written at the bottom.

It could be a spoiler for those who haven't seen the movie yet.)

In the end, Sang-Ryun visits Xiao-Yu's house. Xiao-Yu's mother blames herself for not believing her daughter when she sees his face. And he could find Xiao-Yu and his father in the picture she shows. Sang-Ryun takes the picture to his father and could listen to Xiao-Yu's story, and time goes back 20 years.

Xiao-Yu was a musical disciple of his father. She happens to find a score called "Secret" in an old piano practice room. This is what the first chapter says.

Take a trip along with the notes.

The first man you saw is your destiny,

You'll have to come back on a fast keyboard when you've finished your trip.

Xiao-Yu, who played along with the score, had time-travel. She was only seen in the eyes of the first person, Sang-Ryun, she met. Whenever Xiao-Yu travels in time, she closes her eyes hoping that the person she meets for the first time will be the Sang-Ryun, and counts from the practice room to the Sang-Ryun’s classroom, with a total of 108 steps.

She talks about her experiences with his father and entrusts him with "Secret." Sang-Ryun's father doesn't believe what Xiao-Yu says and tells the class leader, "Please take good care of her. She talked about this and that." The class leader is a worse-than-expected child, and she brags about it to everyone, and in the end, Xiao-Yu is bullied because she is crazy. Xiao-Yu, who was treated like a madman overnight, is saddened and does not go to school, and to make matters worse, her mother takes psychiatric medicine. The mother also doesn't trust her daughter.

Xiao-Yu, who was dragged into the hands of his teacher on graduation day, is still a stranger at school. She goes on a time trip for the last time. She sees traces of another woman on Sang-Ryun’s arm, whom she encounters at his graduation ceremony, and Xiao-Yu goes back to her world. She sits in her classroom in dismay and writes the notes that Sang-Ryun found with a correction pen. At the same time, she reminds the nebulizer needed for her long illness, asthma, at home. Xiao-Yu faces death as it is.

Sang-Ryun's father ends his recollection and asks, "How do you know about Xiao-Yu's story?". Sang-Ryun starts to run to the old piano practice room. And Sang-Ryun's father finds a phrase in a corner of the "Secret" he opens up.

Dear Sang-Ryun. Even if we can't see each other again, even if you forget me, I have a secret to tell you. I love you.

As soon as Sang-Ryun's father sees it, he realizes that Xiao-Yu's stories were true. He also starts to run after realizing that the main character in the story was his son. The son enters a school already under demolition. He succeeds in time travel just before the piano breaks and meets Xiao-Yu, who doesn't know him. The movie ends by falling in love again.

Someone who trusts and recognizes me when everyone is denied. Wouldn't that be the existence of Sang-Ryun for Xiao-Yu?

In Sang-Ryun's world, Sang-Ryun no longer exists, and he only exists in Xiao-Yu's world. When we talk about love, we often use the word "You are my world." But it is not uncommon for anyone to abandon everything in my world and step into a new and eternal world for love.

As Xiao-Yu did, Sang-Ryun would have written down countless 108 steps to reach Xiao-Yu. The relationship between the two, who fell in love because of their secret, may be the result of their efforts. Maybe we're people who came from the past or the future trip along with the notes. Like what Xiao-Yu says, if we “Just cherish this moment now," 108 steps for us would be a success. What are your 108 steps? What do you try to meet?

It took a long time to summarize the plot, perhaps because "Secret" is a movie that I like so much that I watched more than 10 times and even kept a DVD. I just hope my favorite movie was delivered to my neighbor you guys like the original.
